According to Library Journal and Helium, Romance and Mystery/Thriller are the top two selling genres in books (romance, apparently making up for half of all sold paperback books). Since I don't read much of either (I'm not sure chick-lit is considered romance in the figures they are looking at) I need to get some recommendations.
Today I'm starting with Mystery. What are your favorite Mystery novels that you would recommend?
Sue Grafton writes a mystery series called 'The Alphabet Series.' The first one is 'A is for Alibi' (2nd is 'B is for Burgular', then 'C is for...' etc.) They are all about a female private investigator and they are great! The most recent one is 'U is for Undertow'. It think she is planning on taking it all the way to Z.
I also like Chelsea Cain. She has a trilogy out and the first one is 'Heartsick'. It is about a detective and the backstory is he was kidnapped and tortured by a female murderer whose case he was trying to solve. She was caught and jailed but he still has a very disturbing elationship with her and he keeps need her help to solve cases. They are very dark books but I enjoy them.

I suppose it would depend on what kind of mystery you are interested in. I personally don't care for cozy mysteries, but that is a very snobish thing to say because I have read them and liked them. Makes no sense I know.
How about good ole James Patterson and his Alex Cross series. Hmmmm, that may fall under Thriller.
Jane Haddam writes mystery series that is really good as well and is more mystery then thriller, IMO.
Did I serve to confuse you all the more? LOL

I'm also a big fan of Sue Grafton. Read the whole series and loved every book.
If you are looking for a great forensic mystery series, you can't go wrong with Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan series.(The TV series Bones is based on her books)

I was also going to recommend the Sue Grafton series. The heroine, Kinsey Millhone, is great and the whoe series is written really well.
