Your trusty librarian is headed off on a literary adventure. Well, it's really for a wedding, but am making it a literary adventure as well! I am headed to the beautiful New England state of Massachusetts. While there I will be seeing Salem, Concord, Cambridge, and Boston. This is exciting for this bookworm for the following reasons...
Salem: Most famous for the Salem witch trials of the 1600's. If you have not yet read The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, pick up a copy at your closest book store! It is lots of fun to read, and details and facts about the author make it even more intriguing.
Though I have not yet read it, my traveling companion will be while we are on our way East. The Lace Reader takes place in Salem and the movie rights have already been sold. This is your chance to read it before the trailers start hitting theaters.
The Heretic's Daughter. This book has been sitting waiting for me on my Kindle for ages... this might be the perfect week to finally read it! It has gotten good ratings on goodreads, and I am looking forward to reading it either while I'm away or soon after I get back.
Concord: One of my favorite novels of not only childhood, but all time is set at a place called Orchard House in Concord, Massachusetts. In case you are one of the four people in the world who has not read it or seen one of the numerous film adaptations, you might not know I am speaking of a little classic called Little Women. I am incredibly excited to see the actual Orchard House, where Louisa May Alcott wrote and lived with her family.
Concord had other famous author residents as well; Thoreau, Emerson, Hawthorne (who also lived and wrote in Salem), and Alcott, as well as lesser known author Margaret Sidney. All (except for Sidney) are buried in Sleepy Hollow cemetery in Concord.
Cambridge: Not only is Cambridge home to Harvard and the well read, well writ professors and pupils who have attended; it was also the home of Paul and Julia Child. You bet after reading Julie & Julia this summer (and still wanting to read My Life in France) I will be visiting the home where Julia's famous cooking show was filmed, and where she and Paul lived for decades after returning from Europe.
For the Trip: In my bag for the trip are The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, The Help, and my Kindle (with books such as The Heretic's Daughter waiting to be read) -- not to mention the new O Magazine hits stands this Thursday, so I will be picking up my copy of that as well!
