I'm a little bit obsessed with Edna St. Vincent Millay right now (and a little bit worried that I'm going to type all of this and it's going to be erased...Typepad is trying out some new things apparently).
Walking through Book Soup last week, looking for The Portable Dorothy Parker, I find my way into the poetry section. I see a woman on the cover of a book who is haunting, literally. It looks a bit like a picture of a ghost, but she's beautiful in a strange kind of way. I pick up the book (having never heard of the author) and fall in love. I read one poem after another after another. I become fascinated with this person and finally look up to read a description, written by one of the store's booksellers, that has been posted on the shelf for this work. It claims that those who enjoy Dorothy Parker will also enjoy Millay. Not having seen this small index card sized description before I picked up the book, I smile to myself. I am holding Parker under my left arm and Millay in my right hand while I'm reading about how I will like them both. Fate, I tell ya.
Needless to say, I brought Edna home with me and Dorothy and have been reading, and re-reading, her since. I have also used some of my credits from Paperback Swap to order other volumes of her poems and her biography as well. I have a feeling you will be hearing much more about my new friend.
