Welcome to the First Annual Book Giving Gift Guide! Books are the gifts that keep on giving. We can read books multiple times, pass them along, and enjoy them for days on end. Once you're finished with one, you also have a nice decoration to add to the shelves in your house to make you look smart (added bonus). Below you will find many categories of people and the types of books that might appeal to them. Please feel free to contact me if you don't see the specific type of personality you are shopping for... I will do my best to help you think of the perfect book gift! Keep the specific reader in mind when you are browsing these books. Do they enjoy epics, short stories, light reads, heavy reads? In each category of readers there are several sub-categories... too many to mention here. If you want to find something that they will actually read and enjoy, remember to pay attention to what their interests are and try to buy accordingly instead of buying something you wish they would read. Keep in mind, classics are, well... always a classic for everyone on your list! And don't forget, if you see something that you like add it to your own wish list too!
How many times do I hear women saying they would like to see their men read more? Honestly, men don't like the same kinds of books that we do (typically), so keep that in mind. As much as most of you don't want to read a 300 page book about war, men don't often want to read a 300 page book about feelings. Sports, political, or other public figure biographies or autobiographies are often appreciated by male readers. Many tend to stick to non-fiction as a genre of choice, and there is plenty of non-fiction to be read. Look for the best-sellers at your local bookstore and ask male booksellers about their favorite reads of the year. Be sure to check out this great, detailed list (thanks to The Art of Manliness) for the men in your life!
Parents of Young Children
Try this list if you are looking for books to give to the people in your life who have young children at home. Though they are sure to be getting lots of books around this time of their children's lives, they are bound to value a quality parenting book for their arsenal. Though they might not have the time to read it immediately, having it as a resource is sure to be appreciated. And browse this list for the mothers in this group.
Let's face it, most of the people you are going to be buying books for this holiday season will be the women in your life who love general fiction. These are the women who you are constantly recommending to (and getting recommendations from). Your friends who fit in this category love a great story and aren't incredibly prejudice about which genre it is in as long as it keeps them turning the pages. Tune into a great site that caters to book clubs and lets them rate the books. Book Movement's lists are guided by the people reading the stories, so you are sure to get a reader's point of view (and not a marketing push). Enjoy this page, which updates with the current week's top picks. Be sure to bookmark it so that you can go back anytime you are searching for a great gift (or are headed to the library for your own benefit)! If you are shopping for a more specific woman, keep in mind which types of books they normally read. Maybe they don't typically fall in love with the current bestsellers. Perhaps they enjoy romance, heartwarmers, or have a more serious streak that enjoys classics or possibly one of the books from the list above for men.
Hopefully the people who are teaching your children are also life long learners, and that includes reading. As someone who worked professionally with children for over a decade, I can tell you that teachers enjoy encouragement and ideas. Take a gander at these books recommended and voted on by teachers. Some are technical, and others inspirational. Be sure not to forget the teachers in your life when you are making your list, and never be afraid to get them something that will inspire them to keep up the cause of creating a better and brighter generation for the future.
There are so many children's books to choose from, and half of the fun is going into that section of the book store and browsing all of the eye candy that is children's literature. However, I know that during the holiday shopping days time is of the essence (and that not everybody shares my penchant for children's literature), so try out these ideas; whether you are looking for the best children's books of all time or the latest and greatest, we've done the leg work for you.
For the travelers in your life, be it physical travelers or those who don't travel much farther than the couch but have dreams of the places they'll go someday, travel literature is a good bet to please them this holiday season. If they are the types who have their packing perfected and well worn accounts on travel websites, travel guides to their future destinations might be an exciting enticement to get them started planning their next adventure. Or try a fun twist and get them the Wallpaper City Guide for their current city. Most of us forget to "travel" through the very cities that we live in and end up missing a lot of what our local culture has to offer. These are not only small enough to take in their luggage (if they are off to a foreign city), but look beautiful on display.
With as fashionable as being a foodie has become, you are bound to know one or two... and possibly the ones in your life are some of the authentic foodies who would actually get a kick out of a book on food! There is nothing like getting a book about something that you are passionate about. From a website that caters (excuse the pun) to the foodies of the world, their favorite food books are now your ideas for the perfect gift.
Coffee Table Books
If all else fails, coffee table books are an elegant and classic gift to give. They are usually on the pricey side, but make a wonderful statement. In a coffee table book, one tends to want something that is visually stunning and easy to flip through. I consistently have a mound of books on my coffee table of all sizes and types. My guests often can't help but pick them up and peruse through them. I don't mind a mixture of pictures and text, but that is because I have several books. If I were only going to have a single book on the table, I would choose one with exquisite pictures of one of my favorite things (city, atmosphere, objects). Try looking through these ideas to see if anything strikes your fancy.
Hopefully you got some good gifting ideas for the people in your life. Enjoy the season, and have fun looking through all of the books as you put one on the list for someone else, one on the list for you, one on the list for someone else, one on the list for you...
